Hi everyone! So I apologize for the radio silence on the blog for a bit, but there was a good reason. I had a baby! Calvin came a little early, arriving on 8/14. He’s so yummy and all I want to do is cuddle with him. I do have a couple of posts a week lined up for you, and some great guest posters as well. First up is the lovely Sara from Burnett’s Boards with Disney inspiration for your wedding – more importantly, she’s sharing tips for having a Disney-inspired wedding that is not tacky. Get ready to be inspired!
Disney-themed weddings have the potential to roam into tacky territory, and because it’s your wedding, your once in a lifetime event, this is best avoided by sticking to the simple rule: inspiration not imitation. That’s not to say that Disney inspired weddings aren’t completely gorgeous – they are! How can you not find beauty in these romantic tales of love and adventure?!
Whenever a new Disney movie comes out there’s always a surge of themed inspiration shoots centered around the new tale and today I’ve rounded up a few of my favorites. They’re those that stick to the inspiration not imitation rule and are perfectly lovely ways to style your big day.
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
Definitely ones of my favorites – this bookish tale is rife with sources of inspiration for your wedding. Instead of a traditional cake stand, opt for a stack of books, and if you’re a fan of red roses, this is the movie to be inspired by! This red rose and ranunculus bouquet is from a Beauty and Beast themed shoot by Kendall Lynnette Photography and it’s simply gorgeous. Plus, at the end of the shoot the bride changed into a sweet little gold dress as a nod to Belle’s yellow stunner of a ball gown.
CINDERELLA
Disney’s Cinderella is probably the easiest, most common Disney movie to be inspired by. With glitz, glam, and plenty of options for gorgeous shoes and pretty wedding dresses, it’s hard to go wrong. You could even go the bird route with this kind of wedding and get away with it. Personally, I love the key ribbon in this Cinderella themed shoot on Modernly Wed by Sarah Kathleen Photography – it’s such a delightful, Cinderella-ish touch!
SLEEPING BEAUTY
There are two Sleeping Beauty themed wedding inspiration shoots that I’ve come to adore. The first is on Glamour and Grace and is a bit more literal (see it here) and the second is on Burnett’s Boards (photographed by Esther Gallarday Photography) and was inspired by the theme song – Once Upon A Dream. It’s a snowy, quiet, and a romantic beauty of a wedding.
MALEFICENT
Keeping with the whole Sleeping Beauty theme, you could go the evil route too for a more alternative edge. Bit of Ivory Photography’s Maleficent inspired editorial captured this perfectly with some killer couture style. There’s even a driftwood centerpiece that’s reminiscent of a dragon. It’s pretty spectacular!
TANGLED
Flower crowns are in right now (and I hope they are here to stay) but I love how the creative team in this Tangled-themed wedding, photographed by Sunday Romance, spun the traditional flower crown on its head and created a messier, more tangled look for their editorial. With a palette of pinks and greens, they wove flowers and moss into the bride’s flowing curls and braids. It’s brilliant, gorgeous, and definitely shows the inspiration not imitation motto well.
BRAVE
Merida is such an inspirational Disney character, and definitely the kind of girl that would do things her own way and elope! Bit of Ivory Photography captured that sentiment perfectly with her Brave-inspired shoot. It also incorporated arrows, tartans, and tarts for an awesome Scottish vibe.
POCAHONTAS
Bohemian brides need not fret – a Pocahontas inspired wedding might be the right fit for you. Sarah Kathleen Photography created an entire series of shoots based on fairy tales and even though Pocahontas is one of American History’s leading ladies, the Disney version of her story was way more fairytale, far less tragic, and really gorgeous. This shoot took place outdoors near a pond, involved a kayak, sunflowers, and plenty of autumn details.
FROZEN
Meredith Carlson Photography’s Frozen-inspired wedding is probably the most literal of this bunch, but definitely too spectacular to leave out! Captured in the jaw dropping ice castles of Midway, Utah, this one really is a must see.
Don’t you love all of these ideas and ways to be inspired by Disney for your wedding? I’m especially obsessed with the Tangled hairstyle. Thanks Sara!
PS – A Disneyland-inspired real wedding and a day-after honeymoon Disneyland shoot.
