8 Great Halloween Costume Ideas for Kid Pairs

Favorite Halloween Costume Ideas for Pairs: Blues Brothers | Oh Lovely Day

If you’re looking for fun costume ideas for pairs, I thought I’d share some of my favorite ideas. Whether the pair is a couple, siblings, buddies, or a parent and child — all of these would work for whatever pair you may be dressing this year.

Halloween is my favorite and has been since I was a kid. I love getting creative with costumes and trying to make rather than buy (it’s just more fun, don’t you think?) Since Charlie was born we’ve had fun thinking of costumes each year, and every year I think it is probably the last time that he wants to be something cool and fun and not just a Ninja Turtle or Superhero. But so far each year he has just as much fun coming up with unique ideas or dressing up in whatever I make as I do creating it. There’s nothing wrong with store bought (they sure do make life easier!) but there is something really fun about piecing together your own costume. These are some of my favorites.

Jareth the Goblin King & Toby from Labyrinth

Jareth the Goblin King & Toby from The Labyrinth | Kid Halloween Costume Ideas; Charlie & Calvin | Oh Lovely Day

This is my favorite costume pairing of all time. My son Charlie was obsessed with Labryinth last year and wanted to be Jareth. Calvin was the perfect age to be Toby. The stars aligned perfectly. I posted a full post on this one with sources of where I found everything here if you want to see it.  (more…)

Decorate For Fall With DIY Succulent Pumpkins

These DIY succulent pumpkins combine are so easy to make and so fun for fall decorating and gifting! A must pin and make!

If you follow me on instagram or have been a reader of this blog for a while, you saw me make these last year. But they are so good and the DIY was so popular I thought I would post it again. Especially since it combines two of my favorite things: succulents and pumpkins! If I could find a way to add peonies I’d probably break the internet, making it a DIY trifecta of instagram’s most shared things 🙂  (more…)

Labyrinth Costumes for Halloween: Charlie & Calvin, 2015

Jareth the Goblin King & Toby from The Labyrinth| Kid Halloween Costume Ideas; Charlie & Calvin | Oh Lovely Day

This year my sons dressed up as Jareth the Goblin King and Toby from the movie Labyrinth. They were a hit and I had a lot of people ask me how we came up with it, where I got the pieces for the costume, etc. so I thought I would share some more here on the blog.

Halloween is one of my favorite “holidays” and has become even more so since I had kids. My oldest is always game for fun ideas or comes up with great costume ideas himself. While there is nothing wrong with buying a superhero costume from a store, I love creating homemade and handmade creative costume ideas much more, and luckily Charlie is the same. I had so many people ask me: “How do you get him to dress up as what YOU want him to be?” The truth is: Charlie choose his costume this year himself. He wanted to be Jareth from Labyrinth because it is his favorite movie. I might have mentioned a while ago when we were watching it how fun it would be to do Labyrinth costumes for Halloween, but when the time came the idea was his own. It worked perfectly since baby brother Calvin was perfect Toby age to be his Jareth sidekick.

This was my favorite Halloween yet and will definitely be hard to top next year. I may not even try, and Charlie may decide next year he wants to be a superhero that we buy at Target. And that’s totally ok too, but this sure is fun while it lasts!

{Sources for costumes} Jareth: Leggings & boots / white shirt / Added collar and cuffs / wig (I looked everywhere for a good and cheap wig and this was the only one that fit the bill – it was perfect and even though technically an adult size it worked great on Charlie, who has an average sized kid head) / crystal ball / black gloves (which failed to make it into any of these photos) / black faux leather vest was made by friend Salvage Maria / Goblin King necklace was homemade and I can share a DIY for it later if anyone is interested / makeup (DIY with an eyebrow brush/pencil and a little bit of white halloween makeup | Toby: red and white pjs (so easy!)

I’m super excited about what he and Calvin are going to be this year, and it would definitely be on this list if I had photos of them already. But I want to wait for the big Halloween reveal, so I’ll have to come back and update this post to add this year’s coordinating costume later.

If you’re looking for fun costume ideas for pairs, I thought I’d share some of my favorite ideas. Whether the pair is a couple, siblings, buddies, or a parent and child — all of these would work for whatever pair you may be dressing this year.

The Blues Brothers

Favorite Halloween Costume Ideas for Pairs: Blues Brothers | Oh Lovely Day

I may be biased (since this is my husband and son Charlie) but I think this is the cutest costume for a pair of boys or a father-son pair ever. And it is so beyond easy. We already had most of this stuff in our wardrobe, and the “cigarettes” were just rolled up paper and I colored the end. A lollipop would also work well. And before you say anything, I don’t condone children smoking, adults smoking around children, or social Halloween smoking, but it really was a key element of the costume. No kids were harmed, I swear.

Willy Wonka and an Oompa Loompa

Favorite Halloween Costume Ideas for Pairs: Willy Wonka and Oompa Loompa | Oh Lovely Day

One of my favorites from childhood, Willy Wonka and an Oompa Loompa are a great costume pair idea for a night all about candy. This momma made these costumes for her adorable boys and shared the full DIY on her blog, More Than Words Can Describe. SUPER impressive work.

Max and Moishe from Where the Wild Things Are

Favorite Halloween Costume Ideas for Pairs: Max & Moishe from Where The Wild Things Are | Oh Lovely Day

I love choosing beloved costumes from childhood, whether you are dressing kids or adults. So I think Max and Moishe from Where The Wild Things Are is such a darling idea. And how adorable are these two brothers in their awesome homemade costumes!? From Tried And True.

Harold & The Purple Crayon

Favorite Halloween Costume Ideas for Pairs: Harold & The Purple Crayon | Oh Lovely Day

Talk about creative! The momma behind these two cutie pies (and these fabulous tees) made these costumes for her boys last year. I love the idea of choosing a pair of your favorite storybook characters to recreate for a pair of Halloween costumes, especially when it is outside the box like this one. So good. Follow mamacase on IG to see what she dresses her boys as this year.

Axl & Slash from Guns N’ Roses

Another fun idea where you can put some of your own wardrobe to use is an Axl and Slash costume. And it is especially adorable on two little ones, don’t you think? From Costume Works. Any famous band pair would also work well and be super fun.

The Little Boy and Old Man from Up

Another super cute idea for a father-son costume is the little boy and old man from Up. This also comes from More Than Words Can Describe (she’s quite talented at creating costumes!)

Any Pairing from Star Wars

Favorite Halloween Costume Ideas for Pairs: Star Wars | Oh Lovely Day

Think about it: you can pick a pair of Star Wars characters to fit any pair or couple you can think of. R2D2 and C-3PO, Han and Chewbacca, Luke and Leia, Vader and the Emperor, Jabba and bikini-clad Leia… the possibilities are endless. My two boys were R2D2 and Chewy last year — not really a pair but both were adorable and made by The Wishing Elephant (I didn’t have the energy to do costumes all by myself last year and she makes amazing ones that are so much better than Target-bought!). And with a new Star Wars movie coming out this year, it should be easy to find inspiration. May the force be with you.

What are your favorite costume ideas for pairs? What are you or your littles dressing as this year? Post your costumes or fun/favorite costume ideas and tag them with #OLD_halloween on IG so I can follow along and see them all!

It’s OK to Occasionally Ditch The Schedule to Make Memories

Why It's Ok to Occasionally Ditch the Schedule to Make Memories With Your Kids | Oh Lovely Day

Our family survives and thrives on a schedule and routine. It works for us, and it works for our kids. But sometimes parents can get so caught up in the routine and the schedule that we forget to stop and enjoy our kids, and let our kids enjoy being kids. So when I had the opportunity to take my oldest son Charlie to a screening of Hotel Transylvania 2, even though the movie wouldn’t start until close to his usual bedtime, I jumped at the chance. It helped that he didn’t have school the next day, but I still would have taken him regardless. And I’m so glad I did! (more…)

Mini Macklemore (A Halloween Wrap-up)

mini macklemore | oh lovely day

I realize that doing a Halloween costume post the day after Halloween is a bit lame (and late) but I had to share my kiddo’s costume. I’m really into Halloween. It was always one of my favorite things growing up, probably partially because my birthday is two days later so trick-or-treat usually led to a birthday party for me. But I’ve really enjoyed doing Halloween with him the last couple years. And we try really hard to do handmade costumes if we can. Last year Charlie and my husband were the Blues Brothers and topping that was a tall order. But Charlie is really into hip hop and loves Macklemore so we thought that would be a fun costume this year. My friend Janeesa helped me create that fabulous coat and there was enough faux fur left to make a foxy pillow for Charlie’s room – bonus!
